Through film viewing, an interactive panel, master classes and production classes, secondary school students get to work with and learn from some of Vancouver’s top film industry professionals during half- and full-day programs at the Vancity Theatre.

Wednesday, April 13
Sound Design Master Class, 9:30-2:30 PM Good sound is a must! Students will explore the three essential ingredients of a soundtrack: dialogue, sound effects and music. Small teams will generate soundtracks to pre-rendered videos using iMovie and GarageBand. Students will walk away with a firm grasp of how to use GarageBand to achieve good sound. Instructor Gordon Cobb is a sound designer for film, theatre and dance. Space is limited. Students are encouraged to bring their own laptop and/or ear phones.

Animation Master Class, 9:30-2:30 PM Learn advanced low-tech animation techniques by multi-award winning animation filmmaker, Jeff Chiba Stearns. With just a point and shoot camera, students will make expressive, imaginative, and cutting edge animation using Lightning Doodles, Pixilation, Stop Motion and more traditional animation techniques. Through demonstrations, and hands-on activities, students will create their own animated sequences using what they’ve learned and take home a Quicktime file of their own.

"Walking in Two Worlds" - A Program of Short Films, 9:45-11:25 AM This collection of short films represent a diverse range of animation and documentary storytelling. Several directors will be in attendance.   Panel Discussion: “New Frontiers: innovative trends in low-budget filmmaking,” 1:00-2:30 pm This is your chance to get an inside view of filmmaking from some of Vancouver’s leading media professionals. Panelists will offer insider tips about what skills you’ll need, how to get started, telling a good story, clearing music rights, and using social media as a film marketing tool. After a brief introduction from our panel of speakers, there will be plenty of time for an informal Q&A session.
